Does ChatGPT help you… or sell to you?

20/06/2025

ChatGPT is no longer just that friendly assistant that answers your questions or helps you draft an email.

Now it also recommends products, shows reviews and takes you straight to the store… without leaving the chat.

OpenAI has just integrated shopping features into its platform.

And although for now there is no direct advertising, Sam Altman —its CEO— has already acknowledged that they are exploring a monetization model based on affiliate links.

That means the most popular chatbot in the world… could also become the most influential seller in the world.

From search engine to seller: the new digital paradigm.

For years, Google was the great discovery channel.

You searched for something… and Google showed you thousands of results to choose from.

But that has changed.

With the integration of shopping features, the conversation becomes commerce.

You no longer need to search. You just have to ask.

  • And AI will respond with:
  • Relevant products
  • Cross reviews
  • Direct links to buy
  • All in one place. From a single message.

Fast, convenient… and potentially dangerous.

Neutrality or hidden business strategy of ChatGPT?

OpenAI insists: the recommendations are not influenced by payments.

But Altman was clear: the affiliate model is on the table.

And that changes everything.

Because if AI makes money by recommending products… every suggestion becomes a business decision.

And every conversation becomes a conversion strategy.

What seemed neutral… could now be the most sophisticated sales funnel ever created.

More personal. Even more convenient. But is it riskier?

An assistant that knows you and suggests exactly what you need sounds useful.

But it also raises important questions:

  • What data are you giving away unknowingly?
  • Who decides which options you see… and which you don’t?
  • Does AI recommend the best… or what has the highest margin?

The line between personalized help and commercial manipulation is blurring.

Choosing in times of automation

Conversational commerce is already a reality.

And with it comes a new way of deciding… or not deciding.

If AI does the searching, filters the information, recommends the best option, and takes you straight to the shopping cart…

at what point did you choose?

That is the real dilemma.

This is not about rejecting technology.

It’s about not giving up our critical capacity.

Understanding how what we use works.

And demanding transparency in the systems that today influence more than ever what we consume, think, and share.

Conclusion: when conversation turns into conversion

ChatGPT is transforming the future of e-commerce.

But it is also rewriting the rules of digital trust.

Today you ask it things.

Tomorrow… you buy everything from it.

And if we don’t question it today, we might stop knowing if AI helps us… or simply sells to us.

And what do you think?

Would you use ChatGPT as your shopping advisor?

How will you know if it recommends the best… or the most profitable?

Leave me your thoughts in the comments.
